Getting ready wasn’t as complicated as you may think, although there are some requirements to enter a different country. It is not too much of a hassle to get all the paperwork in order. I am flying into Colombia, South America and from there all of South America by car. The first country is the most complicated because customs tend to be more restrictive at airports than at land border crossings. After checking with my doctor and with the ICA (Colombian USDA), I was told to have all my vaccines up to date, which I did. Also I had to make sure my doctor gave me a physical and then it had to be approved by the USDA. All of this had to be done within 10 days of the departure day. The USDA returns the approved paperwork and that’s it! You are ready to go. I chose to fly with Avianca because they had the most reasonable prices and the least amount of restrictions when traveling with humans. I chose to fly out of Fort Lauderdale so I wouldn’t have any layovers. I just didn’t want to run the risk of my luggage being lost or even losing my humans. Also make sure you get a comfortable crate. It could get bumpy and scary at times so maybe bring a blanket from home or a familiar toy.
